About the client

AIMe is a research project in the Department of Computer Science at James Madison University, looking at how students learn to work with AI.

What we delivered

  • Google sign-in for students, and a separate teacher login
  • Saved conversations, so students can pick up where they left off
  • Students’ own free Gemini key, stored in their browser rather than on the server
  • Privacy-friendly analytics and self-hosted monitoring

The story

  1. The challenge

AI chatbots will happily solve a homework problem outright, which teaches nothing. The researchers wanted a tutor that behaves like a good teacher: asking questions, giving hints and leaving the thinking to the student.

  2. What we did

AIMe is a web app built around one rule: coach, don’t answer. Students sign in with Google, add their own free Gemini key — stored in their browser and never saved on the server — and work through problems in a conversation that is saved for next time. Teachers have their own login.

Because real students use it, privacy was designed in from the start: page views are counted without cookies, and AI requests are monitored on the project’s own server rather than a third-party service.

  3. The result

AIMe is running as a pilot at aime.cs.jmu.edu.
